Daniel Canogar
by Galerie Anita Beckers

The Artist

Daniel Canogar, born in 1964 in Madrid, has built a transcultural career spanning Spain and the United States. Initially a photographer, he earned his master’s degree at NYU’s International Center of Photography in 1990 and later turned to projected imagery and installation art. His works are generative, driven by algorithms that respond in real-time to various data, such as climate changes, 24/7 news, or Google searches. They seek to integrate generative art into art history, drawing inspiration from Abstract Expressionism, Performance Art, and Op art.

“Chyron” overlays international news chyrons, creating a chaotic fabric representing the ecosystem of conflicting information. Daniel Canogar’s series “Surge” explores how the world of data negotiates its relation- ship with the physical world. The project emerges from the artist’s preoccupation with the intangible – and invisible - nature of one of the main driving forces of our economy and society: the data-sphere. This “crisis of visibility” makes it very difficult for most of the population to comprehend how big data is impacting their lives. To materialize the world of data is an attempt to help us cognitively incorporate this new reality.

The artworks are ribbon-shaped LED-screens that emerge from the wall with curving gestures and then descend to the floor. The screens become conduits of data related to real-time meteorological information of the city of Paris, including wind speed, temperature, barometric pressure and humidity. The flow of information is represented via particles that leave trails behind them, creating abstract forms that take the pulse of the city’s activities.

The Gallery

Established in 1995 in Darmstadt, the gallery space moved to Frankfurt am Main in 1998. From the beginning, the emphasis has been on promoting young artists. In particular, the gallery has worked for the promotion of video and new media art by enabling artists to show their work in the necessary settings, as well as having supported publications and productions. Gallery artists have also been invited to take part in the exhibitions of important, international museums, such as (selection) MoMA, New York; SF MoMA, San Francisco; Whitney Museum, New York; Serpentine Gallery, London; ZKM Karlsruhe; Ludwig Museum, Köln; international festivals and biennials. After 20 years of activity, it is the aim of the gallery to contrast historical positions with emerging artists, particularly in photography and video. Today the emphasis is on the dialogue of these young artists with established artists.
