Elyn Zimmerman
by Bigaignon

The Artist

Elyn Zimmerman was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and raised in Los Angeles, California, where she got a Master of Fine Arts degree from UCLA. During her undergraduate years at UCLA, Elyn Zimmerman took courses in the fine arts program while earning a degree in the psychology of perception. It was her knowledge of this discipline and her interest in contemporary art that led her to work for Jim Turrell and Robert Irwin, researching their joint project for the ‘Art and Technology’ exhibition at LACMA in 1967, an exhibition that would mark the beginning of the ‘Light & Space’ movement. In the 1970s, Elyn Zimmerman created a number of temporary installations for major museum exhibitions. She has received numerous awards (Artist Fellowship Awards from the National Endowment for the Arts; CAPS Artist Fellowship; Japan-US Creative Artists Exchange Fellowship; New Talent Award, LACMA; Resident, American Academy in Rome, 2010; Isamu Noguchi Award, 2016) and has taught art at university level. Represented for many years by Gagosian, her work is included in prestigious collections including MOMA (New York), LACMA (Los Angeles), Whitney Museum of American Art (New York) and many others.

Two installations Untitled, Berkeley (1974) and White Room (1975) will be presented at OFFSCREEN by Galerie Bigaignon. The first consists of eight transparent glass panels set against a blank white wall and lit in a specific way. The second is a set of 7 silver prints and 7 graphite drawings, questioning light and shadow and their sensitive equivalence.

The Gallery

Bigaignon is a light-sensitive contemporary art gallery. The line of the gallery finds its roots in the avant-garde movements of light and space, minimalism, abstract art, concrete photography and constructivism, and is built upon the strong conviction that photography has entered a new era. Profoundly engaged in the promotion of artists who work with the fundamental elements of light and time, whatever the medium they use, the gallery is contributing to the rise of a new avant-garde. As such, with a strong international focus, it defends and promotes the unique vision of artists it represents or supports, whether they be emerging, mid-career or established worldwide, in their quest to propose a new visual vocabulary, challenge the photographic medium and explore the full extent of its possibilities.
