LAb[au] is a trio of artists composed of Manuel Abendroth, Jérôme Decock and Thibault Drouillon and was established in 1997 in Brussels, Belgium.

LAb[au] questions aesthetics and semiotics conceptually and algorithmically. Their work involves geometry, colour, light and movement. The notion of space is also central to their concerns. LAb[au] questions the influence of technology on our senses and our understanding of art and its forms, methods and objectives.

In 2009, LAb[au] won the Young Belgian Painters Award of the Fine Art Palace (Brussels).
Their work has been presented at the Contemporary Art Museum (Montreal, 2015), MOMA (New York, 2014), Biennale di Venezia (Venice, 2013), Seoul Museum of Art (Seoul, 2013), Witte de With (Rotterdam, 2006), New Museum (New York, 2003), to name a few. They made several works in the public space, and their work is part of public and private international collections. Among others: orgigamiSquare 59 squares, Linklaters, Madrid; SwarmDots, Fidelity Luxembourg city or chronoPrints, Zebrastraat, Gent.

“Our approach is a semantic and semiotic reading related to aesthetics, always operating at this metalevel of language. Approaching art in this manner leads us to the codes and structures of the system ‘art’ which operate between the signified and the signifier. But by declaring what we already know and see, conceptual artists introduced ‘tautology’ into the discourse which operates within a defined and finite system, that of language. Galerie La Patinoire Royale Bach, a contemporary art gallery located in the cultural heart of Brussels, opened its doors in April 2015. The gallery has taken over a 3,000 m2 building in downtown Brussels, once the world’s first roller skating rink built in 1877 and made a historical monument in 1995. This space is able to offer exhibitions of different formats and expressions, simultaneously or separately, giving full measure of its broad artistic spectrum.

Galerie Patinoire Royale Bach represents over 20 artists from a wide variety of backgrounds: these include established artists such as Lita Albuquerque, Alice Anderson, Casper Brindle, Carlos Cruz-Diez, Michel Mouffe, Joana Vasconcelos and Marthe Wery, as well as promising talents on the local and international scene such as Marion Charlet, Thomas Devaux, João Freitas, Sahar Saâdaoui, etc. through a rich program of around ten exhibitions a year.

Since its creation, the gallery has consistently demonstrated its commitment to art by participating in numerous contemporary art fairs and exhibitions in France and abroad, and by promoting artists’ work to a wide network of collectors and public and private institutions.

Galerie La Patinoire Royale Bach will soon be exhibiting at Paris Photo, Luxembourg Art Week, Art Antwerp and BRAFA 2024.
