Thomas Devaux
by Galerie La Patinoire Royale Bach

The Artist

Thomas Devaux, a photographer and plastician, was born in 1980 and currently resides and works in Paris. Genuine polymorphous artist, he already experimented various mediums such as photography, painting or even collage alongside his studies in cinema.
Throughout his career, Thomas Devaux has been interested in sacred, secular and transcendency themes. His photographic series are reminiscent of paintings. Foundational values of photography, as well as current evolution, are at play in his work.

In 2012, David Lynch displayed Devaux’s photographs during the inauguration of the Silencio in Paris. In 2016, the Museum Van Gaasbeek in Belgium showcased his work alongside other major photographers, including Cindy Sherman, Erwin Olaf, Wim Delvoye, Jan Fabre, and Damien Hirst. Devaux participated to the Biennal of Photo Nicephore in 2020. His work is exhibited internationally, with shows in Shanghai, Taipei, and New York. His work is also part of different collections such as the BNF, the Orlean Museum or Huawei.

“My characters do not really exist; they are made up of multiple bodies, of a swarm. […] I sanctify my people, transforming them into icons that I smash in subtle details, sweeping all the conceit at once.” – ArtsHebdoMédias, Thomas Devaux – La dimension émotionnelle du corps

The Gallery

Galerie La Patinoire Royale Bach, a contemporary art gallery located in the cultural heart of Brussels, opened its doors in April 2015.

The gallery has taken over a 3,000 m2 building in downtown Brussels, once the world’s first roller skating rink built in 1877 and made a historical monument in 1995. This space is able to offer exhibitions of different formats and expressions, simultaneously or separately, giving full measure of its broad artistic spectrum.

Galerie Patinoire Royale Bach represents over 20 artists from a wide variety of backgrounds: these include established artists such as Lita Albuquerque, Alice Anderson, Casper Brindle, Carlos Cruz-Diez, Michel Mouffe, Joana Vasconcelos and Marthe Wery, as well as promising talents on the local and international scene such as Marion Charlet, Thomas Devaux, João Freitas, Sahar Saâdaoui, etc. through a rich program of around ten exhibitions a year.

Since its creation, the gallery has consistently demonstrated its commitment to art by participating in numerous contemporary art fairs and exhibitions in France and abroad, and by promoting artists’ work to a wide network of collectors and public and private institutions.

Galerie La Patinoire Royale Bach will soon be exhibiting at Paris Photo, Luxembourg Art Week, Art Antwerp and BRAFA 2024.
